New Organizations Established to Push Linux
November 18, 2005
Recently the Linux Phone Standards Forum was established to boost utilization of Linux in mobile devices. Founding members include ARM, Cellon, Esmertec AG, France Telecom, FSM Labs, Huawei, Jaluna, MIZI Research, Montavista Software, Open-Plug, and PalmSource. The forum will try to define standards for Linux-based mobile devices, especially targeting the applications-layer.

In other Linux-related news, IBM, Sony, Philips, Red Hat, and Novell have jointly established a company called OIN (Open Invention Network). The new company's goal is to acquire Linux-patents and to license these to companies and individuals without charging royalties, as long as these companies or individuals do not assert their patents against Linux.
